description PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has increased reliability and durability without reducing productivity by solving such a problem that a risk of damage to a film is increased when plasma density is made high and amorphous properties of a protective film is enhanced. SOLUTION: When an oxygen amount distribution has the maximum value in the thickness direction of a magnetic layer 2, oxygen is incorporated into the magnetic layer in such a ratio that the maximum value of the oxygen amount on the surface of the magnetic layer 2 is 1 to 1.5 times as much as the least oxygen amount in the intermediate part of the magnetic layer 2. Thereby, plasma density is increased without increasing application voltage when the protective film 3 is film-deposited, and the thin film magnetic recording medium having excellent reliability and durability can be provided inexpensively.
