description PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing high-quality cupric oxide in manpower-saved production equipment having a small number of steps. SOLUTION: The cupric oxide obtained from basic copper carbonate and a caustic alkali aqueous solution has 74-79% copper content, ≤20 ppm chlorine content and ≥20 m2/g specific surface area. A peak intensity ratio I/Is of the peak intensity I of the (-1, 1, 1) plane of an X-ray diffraction spectrum to the peak intensity Is of the (-1, 1, 1) plane of standard cupric oxide is ≤0.3 and a half-value width ratio F/Fs of the half-value width F of a peak of the (-1, 1, 1) plane of the obtained cupric oxide to the half-value width Fs of a peak of the (-1, 1, 1) plane of standard cupric oxide is ≥3.0. The method for producing the cupric oxide comprises a step of heating a solution at 50-100°C which contains basic copper carbonate and caustic alkali by 0.2-0.45 molar ratio of basic copper carbonate to caustic alkali and has 1-20 wt.% caustic alkali concentration.
