Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a PLCC mode liquid crystal display element allowed to be driven, even at a low voltage and having excellent sharpness suited also to simple matrix drive. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element is constituted of holding a polymer/liquid crystal composite, in which a cyanophenyl-based nematic liquid crystal mixture is dispersed into a polymer matrix as a continuous phase and which has a light transmission state, when the refractive index of liquid crystal almost coincides with the refractive index of the polymer matrix and a light-scattering state when these refractive indexes do not coincide with each other according to the application of voltage between a pair of substrates with electrodes, where at least one of the substrates is provided with a transparent electrode. Where, a copolymer using a mixture of two or more single-functional acrylate monomers and one or more multifunctional acrylate monomer and having a solubility parameter Sp value (Small method) of 8.3 to 8.6 as a raw material is used as the polymer matrix. When the composition, containing the cyanophenyl based nematic liquid crystal mixture and the acrylate monomer mixture, is uniformly dissolved and irradiated with light, the liquid crystal display element can be manufactured.
