Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus of a simple structure, and to provide a method for implementing an all-optical logical OR element which uses gain saturation characteristics of a single semiconductor optical amplifier and have an operating speed of ≥2.5 Gbit/s. SOLUTION: The all-optical logical OR element embodying apparatus which utilizes gain saturation characteristics of the signal semiconductor optical amplifier 120 is adopted, where the apparatus is characterized in that when input signal patterns A and B are ORed, pulse patterns of A and B are made incident on the single semiconductor optical amplifier 120 as an irradiation signal A and a pump signal B, respectively from a reverse direction to obtain A(-B), and an optical coupler 132 couples A(-B) and B together to obtain A(-B)+B=A+B to perform the OR operation.
