description PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a TN type liquid crystal display device which has a wide field angle and a little color variation of black display and makes it possible to observe a color image whose contrast and hue are substantially equal over a wide visual field angle. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with: a liquid crystal element 1 provided with a liquid crystal layer 10 wherein liquid crystal molecules 11 are twisted and aligned at a twist angle of 90°; and visual field angle improving elements 14 and 15 each having a discotic liquid crystal layer 18 between front and rear polarizing plates 12 and 13 having axes of transmission orthogonally displaced to each other. The mean tilt angle α of discotic liquid crystal molecules 19 of both visual field angle improving elements 14 and 15 is set to a value satisfying α=90°-θ, where θ represents the mean tilt angle of liquid crystal molecules 11 when black display voltage is applied between electrodes 4 and 5 of the liquid crystal element 1.
