description | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a batch process for transesterification between DMT and alkylene glycol that is lowered in the fuel cost with the operations stabilized by preliminarily inhibiting a part of DMT from splashing into the reaction distillate during the transesterification and utilizing the distillate as a safe boiler fuel. SOLUTION: When the transesterification reaction between dimethyl terephthalate and alkylene glycol is carried out batch wise, the low boiling substances occurring in the transesterification reaction process is allowed to flow through the rectification column 7 into the condenser 8 and the distillate is cooled, condensed and distilled off. A part of the distillate is refluxed to control the temperature in the rectification column. During the time from the start of transesterification to the elapse of a prescribed time, the reaction distillate in the rectification column is maintained under the total reflux. |
