Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical member and a method for working the member by which a small-size product can be efficiently formed from a discarded material produced when a large-size product is worked. SOLUTION: A long length strip-like polarizing master plate is cut diagonal at a specified angle to the absorption axis 20 to form a parallelogram polarizing plate. Each parallelogram polarizing plate is cut perpendicular to the opposite side lines at a specified interval to obtain a plurality of large-size square polarizing plates as large-size products. A plurality of right-angled triangle discarded material 13 and a plurality of trapezoid discarded material 14 are combined and joined with the absorption axes aligned to form a square joined polarizing plate 15 as a product and delivered to a user. The user cuts the square joined polarizing plate perpendicular to each side line at a specified interval to obtain a plurality of square polarizing plates 16 as small-sized products.
