Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which prevents afterimages or burning caused by optical hysteresis, can be driven at an applied low voltage and shows superior display quality, such as contrast. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device comprises a lower substrate 2, an upper substrate 1 facing the lower substrate 2, and a liquid crystal polymer composite layer 7, disposed between the upper substrate 1 and the lower substrate 2. A first insulating film 5 and a second insulating film 6, having different critical surface tension from each other, are formed on the inner faces of the upper substrate 1 and the lower substrate 2, respectively. Furthermore, dome-like liquid crystal drops 10 and liquid crystal drops 9 are formed on the surfaces of the first insulating film 5 and the second insulating film 6, respectively. The liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal drops 10 are aligned in parallel with the upper substrate 1, while the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal drops 9 are aligned perpendicular to the lower substrate 2. Thereby, the steep voltage-transmittance characteristic is relaxed, and the apparent hysteresis is reduced to decrease afterimages, burning or the like.
