description PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular orientation liquid crystal display device having a structure of a pixel division pattern by forming a pair of projections in the pixel region of a first substrate and forming a pixel electrode which has an opening pattern to expose one of the projections and to cover the rest of projections on the pixel region. SOLUTION: A pair of projections 11, 12 are formed in one pixel on a lower substrate 10, and a pixel electrode 13 is formed thereon. The pixel electrode 13 has an opening pattern 5 which exposes one projection 11. A perpendicular oriented film 14 is applied on the pixel electrode 13 and the exposed projection 11. Liquid crystal molecule 31, 32 are injected between the lower substrate 10 and an upper substrate 20. When a voltage is applied between the pixel electrode 13 of the lower substrate 10 and a common electrode 21 of the upper substrate 20, the liquid crystal molecules are tilted in different directions in the two regions on both sides around each of the projection 12 and the opening pattern 5, and the optical characteristics of the two regions compensate with each other to increase the viewing angle.
