description PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the leakage of magnetic flux, and improve attraction against a plunger by forming at least one side of an output shaft and a thrust spline by a magnetic body material having a relative magnetic permeability lower than that of iron, or a material formed by thermally treating martensite stainless. SOLUTION: A starter for an engine is covered with a front bracket 20, a center bracket 30, and a rear bracket 40, and is provided with an annular electromagnetic switch 2, an overrunning clutch 3, a plunger (a movable iron core) 4, and the like on a circumference of an output shaft 1 driven by a d.c. electric motor M. In this case, a magnetic body material having a relative magnetic permeability lower than that of iron, or a material formed in such a way that high frequency hardening treatment is carried on martensite stainless out by micro wave, are used in the output shaft 1. Accordingly strength of the output shaft 1 is ensured, it is reduced that magnetic flux is leaked to the output shaft 1 and a thrust spline 3A, and attraction against of the plunger 4 is also improved.
