Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a printer not requiring the manual adjustment of a gap and to prevent the breakage of the pin of a printing head caused by the mis- adjustment of the gap. SOLUTION: A gap adjusting device is equipped with a shaft 3 fitted with a torque limiter 10 rotated by a drive mechanism 2, the platen 4 on which a medium is placed held on the shaft 3 through a cam 11 and raised and lowered by the rotation of the cam 11 due to the rotation of the shaft 3 and the protector 5 arranged above the platen 4 so as to freely advance and retreat and loaded with a printing head 12. A reflection type sensor 6 reflecting emitted light (a) from the platen 4 to detect the reflected light (b) is arranged to the protector and a controller for controlling the driving of the drive mechanism 2 in a negative direction on the basis of the detection result of the reflection type sensor 6 and the drive signal from the drive mechanism 2 (motor 7) due to the driving of the torque limiter is included.
