description PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an amine-oxide-group-containing maleic anhydride copolymer which, when used as a dispersant for a dye, requires a short dispersion time and gives improved tinting strength, color deepness, and pigment stability by reacting a maleic anhydride copolymer with a diamine through its anhydride groups and oxidizing the product to form amine oxide groups bonded through (hemi-)amido groups. SOLUTION: At least one mol% anhydride groups of a maleic anhydride copolymer having a maleic anhydride/comonomer ratio of 1: (1-3) are reacted with a diamine of formula II, and the product is oxidized to form amine oxide groups bonded through (hemi-)imido groups of formulas II and/or III to obtain an amine-oxide-groupcontaining maleic anhydride copolymer having a weight- average molecular weight of 1,000-100,000 g/mol. In the formulas, R1 is H or a 1-24C monovalent hydrocarbon group; R2 is a 2-24C divalent alkylene; and R3s and R4s are 1-12C, desirably, 1-16C aliphatic and/or alicyclic alkyls.
