description PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain the white balance processing to obtain an image of more natural colors by converting an object image into the image data consisting of the pixel value, calculating the coordinates set on the chromaticity coordinates for each prescribed pixel value of the image data and applying the weighting to the image data based on plural areas which are divided on the chromaticity coordinates. SOLUTION: A digital still camera stores temporarily the image data obtained via a photographing lens 1, a CCD 2 and an A/D converter 3 in an image memory 4. An MPU 5 performs the white balance control based on the image data stored in the memory 4. The R, G and B data on the sampling points (a single unit consisting of 8 pixels) are obtained from the image data. Then each of sampling color coordinates is decided and the weighting is added to the color coordinates. Thus, the chromaticity coordinates are decided for an entire image. This chromaticity coordinates of the image are used as the white balance data to reduce the influences of colors such as green and magenta.
