description | 833,278. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 3, 1958 [Dec. 4, 1.957], No. 37724/57. Class 40 (2). Apparatus for recording on and reproducing from a tape-like medium in the form of parallel tracks comprises a rotatable carrier supporting a plurality of recording or reproducing devices describing the same arcuate path, and means for causing said medium to be moved lengthwise and in transducing proximity with said devices along a path oblique to the axis of their orbit of rotation and flexed around a portion only of said orbit whereby each device in turn can be brought into transducing relationship with successive portions of said medium. In the embodiment described, magnetic heads 2 are mounted on a disc rotating between cylindrical guide members 4 into oblique contact with which a record tape is held by guides 8. The guide members may be provided with guide ribs 13. Signals recorded on the tape may be recorded in the form of a modulated carrier to prevent cross-talk between tracks, preferably frequency or pulse modulated. Correct registration during reproduction may be effected by recording separate synchronizing signals which may be used to control a synchronous motor or a phase-locked servo drive. |
