description 771,914. Wheels. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. March 1, 1955 [March 5, 1954], No. 6435/54. Classes 144 (1) and 144 (2). A wheel comprises integrally moulded disc, rim and hub portions 1a, 1c and 1d of vulcanite, with a solid rubber tyre 3 vulcanized to the rim portion 1c and a pair of telescoped metal sleeves 2a, 2b, each having a radial end flange, 2c moulded with the hub portion 1d to form an outer race member 2 for ball or roller bearings 5. As shown, the wheel is compression moulded from fibre - reinforced rubber compound and the tyre 3 is transfer or displacement moulded on the rim 1c, or alternatively an extruded length of unvulcanized tread stock is butt-jointed around the previously roughened, rubber-solutioned rim of a partly vulcanized wheel and the assembly finally cured in a mould. The disc 1a is strengthened by circumferentially-spaced radially-extending thickenings 1b. The race member sleeves 2a, 2b comprise steel pressings, the axially outer ends 2c of which are turned radially inwardly to retain the rollers 5, the radially outer sleeve 2b having its other end 2d bell-mouthed to key into the wheel hub. For use with ball-bearings, the inner surface of the race portion may be circumferentially grooved.
