Secure storage of hand portable electronic devices

A locker apparatus includes a plurality of lockers, each locker for storing a hand portable electronic device 200. Each locker comprises a housing 22, a locking mechanism and sensor circuitry. The housing defines a chamber for storing a hand portable electronic device and comprises an outer face having an aperture arranged to expose at least a portion of a hand portable electronic device when a hand portable electronic device is stored in the chamber. The locking mechanism locks and unlocks the locker. The sensor circuitry receives at least one of light signals or audio signals from a hand portable electronic device stored in the chamber. The locker apparatus further includes control circuitry which determines that either a predetermined light signal or a predetermined audio signal has been received by the sensor circuitry of a particular locker and responds by controlling the locking mechanism of the particular locker to unlock the particular locker to provide a user with access to a hand portable electronic device stored in the chamber of the particular locker. The housing can comprise a door 26 having the aperture 30 and a hand portable electronic device support 34 mounted on the inner face of the door.
