description A device 100 suitable for connection to an external current line 110 with a switching mechanism in a housing 120 for opening and closing a current conduction path. The switch comprises a compliant component for carrying a moveable conductor 130 along a first axis. The compliant component has a rigid portion 142 extending along the first axis 165, and a flexible biasing component 148 extending between one end 146 of the rigid component and the housing. Part of the flexible component is held by the housing. In use, a force is applied to the end of the rigid component opposite the flexible component along the first axis 170. The flexible component deforms (fig.2) in a direction other than along the first axis, allowing the conductor to move, either opening or closing the switch. When the force is removed, the flexible component rebounds, returning the switch to its original position. The force may be applied linearly or via rotational movement of a cam. The flexible component may comprise one or more ligaments (fig.3A) and may extend perpendicular to the first axis from the rigid component. The flexible and rigid portions may be integrally formed, optionally from an insulating plastic.
