description A method for encapsulating or parsing media data in which a first portion of the media data is organised into a first set of one or more media data tracks and encapsulated into media fragments; and associated metadata is encapsulated into a metadata portion. A second portion of the media data is organised into a second set of one or more media data tracks; and the second set of track and associated metadata are all encapsulated into one media fragment. An advantage of the invention is that a writer of a ISOBMFF file does not need to know all possible tracks when creating an initial MovieBox; instead the second portion of the media data is stored in a dynamic track which may be useful for additional media streams corresponding to additional languages, subtitles, camera views etc. Other aspects of the invention include encapsulating media data as a set of entities according to a parameter independent from the encapsulation, and signalling an indication to the client that the set of entities is to be parsed only if the client has knowledge about the parameter. The entities may be a set of corrupted samples.
