The cylinder head 130 is clamped to the engine block so that the clamping forces are evenly distributed across all of the cylinders in such a way that the total clamping load of each group 800, 810 of bolts surrounding each cylinder 121-124 and applied to each cylinder 121-124 is substantially the same. This is achieved either by using outer bolts which provide less clamping force in themselves, for example by means of a reduced diameter of shaft, or by tightening the outer bolts less than the inner bolts.
