description An apparatus for playing a game comprises a playing surface 2 having a first area 14 and a second area 17, a projectile 24 and at least two propulsion devices 8, preferably pairs of flippers. One propulsion device 8 is located at one end of the apparatus adjacent the first area 14, whilst a second propulsion device 8 is located at a second end of the apparatus adjacent the second area 17. Each of the propulsion devices 8 are arranged to propel the projectile across the playing surface 2 towards the other propulsion device 8. A substrate 18 is provided above the first and second areas 14, 17 of the playing surface 2 and has apertures that co-operate with peg portions of two sets of playing pieces 12, 16. The peg portions project below the substrate 18 and can be hit with the projectile 24 during the course of the game to dislodge the playing piece 12, 16 from its position. The first and second areas 14, 17 are preferably planar and are inclined to one another, forming an apex or a valley towards the middle of the apparatus. The apparatus may be used to play a "Battleships"-type game.
