description A method for measuring the rate of attrition of rock, comprises the steps of: (i) providing a sample of rock consisting substantially of particles greater than a selected size, (ii) agitating the sample of rock in a liquid, (iii) removing particles of rock above the selected size from the liquid to leave a slurry comprising the liquid and any particles of rock of the selected size or smaller, and (iv) measuring a property of the slurry indicative of the amount of rock in the slurry. Preferably, the property measured is the density of the slurry which is determined non-gravimetrically. Apparatus for effecting the invention is claimed (claim 11) and comprises a container 2 in which granules of rock 1 are agitated in a liquid 5. After agitation, particles of rock above the selected size are removed from the liquid by filtration, the filter 4 being located at an end 8 of the container.
