Zusammenfassung:	A system and method for controlling an internal combustion engine 120, to protect it from damage caused by excessive back pressure, involves monitoring back pressure and controlling the engine to reduce back pressure when it exceeds a threshold value. The back pressure may be monitored using a sensor 126 coupled to an exhaust, or may be estimated based on engine operating parameters. The threshold may be a function of requested engine output, engine speed and torque. Controlling the engine may include reducing engine torque while the back pressure exceeds the threshold. Tampering with emission control components may be detected based on the back pressure being less than a second threshold corresponding to current operating conditions.
