Zusammenfassung:	A network (eg. for automobile drive by wire) for carrying control data between a controller and a device (eg engine, brake system). The network comprises a bus operable to carry data according to an IEEE 1394 standard. The IEEE 1394 standard defines a start up operation that includes one or more sequences, whose duration is too long for many control applications. The network therefore utilises a modified IEEE 1394 initialisation procedure (150) that omits the debounce delay (160) and speed negotiation (164) steps to reduce the duration.
