description 1299373 Flame retardant filaments COURTAULDSLtd 8 May 1970 [9 May 1969] 23676/69 Heading C3F Flame retardant regenerated cellulose filaments incorporate both tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)- phosphate (T.D.B.P.P.) and a polymer made by reacting tetrakishydroxymethyl phosphonium chloride (T.H.P.C.), or a precondensate formed by reacting T.H.P.C. and urea, and optionally melamine, (preferably in a molar ratio of 2 : 1, plus up to 0À12 melamine if present), with excess ammonia. Preferably the polymer and T.D.B.P.P. total 15-30% by weight of the filaments, based on the weight of cellulose. Preferably T.D.B.P.P. comprises 10-68% and the polymer 90-32% by weight of the total T.D.B.P.P. plus polymer. The polymer preferably is in the form of particles of mean diameter up to 4 Á. The polymer and T.D.B.P.P. may be added to viscose which is spun into a regeneration bath. The polymer, which may be added to the viscose as an aqueous dispersion, is preferably first treated with an oxidizing agent (e.g. H 2 O 2 ).
