The irradiation tube is shunted by a resistance 9, and a capacitance 10 is provided by the envelope of the spark gap 6. A capacitor 22 is charged to 5 kV. from a rectifier circuit and discharged via switch 23 and the pulse transformer to produce a pulse with a microsecond rise time and an amplitude of 150 kV. across the secondary winding 13. After the breakdown of the spark gap 6 a voltage of the same amplitude and a rise time of 1 to 3 nanoseconds is applied to the cold cathode 8 of the irradiation tube.
