The screen of a vibratory screening apparatus comprises a plurality of parallel rods shaped to define a flight of steps, each step having a tread portion 16a, b and a riser portion 17, and a plurality of transverse tie rods 20, each tie rod of at least the three upper steps of the flight being positioned below a tread at a point such that it is situated below the trajectory of the particles passing over the step. The upper steps form a receiving section for the material to be screened, and are steeper than the lower steps. The angle of declination A of the risers in the receiving section is at least 70 and preferably greater than 90 (Fig. 4, not shown).
