Heading B3D. [Also in Division G4] A device to compensate for grinding wheel wear in a grinding machine comprises an actuating mechanism 2 for moving a grinding wheel relative to a workpiece being machined, and a measuring mechanism 1 for measuring a workpiece that has already been machined, the mechanism 1 comprising a casing 3 for locating the workpiece being measured, and a measuring probe 9. The probe is resiliently mounted in a base 6 which is resiliently mounted in the casing 3 for movement relative to the casing in the direction of the workpiece being measured, and the base is operatively associated with a pusher 21 adapted to cause the base and measuring probe to move towards the workpiece being measured. An output unit 12 includes resilient means, separate from the resilient mounting of the measuring probe 9, for resiliently mounting the unit 12 between the base 6 and probe 9 for transmitting a signal to the actuating mechanism 2 to move the grinding wheel. The signal is produced by relative movement of the base 6 and probe 9 after the probe has contacted the workpiece being measured. In the device described the probe 9 is supported by elastic diaphragms 7, 8 in the base 6, which is itself supported by elastic diaphragms 4, 5 in the casing 3. The probe 9 is linked by flat springs 13, 14 to a flange 11 of the base 6, each spring carrying an electrical contact 15, 16. The pusher 21 is a wedge. The actuating mechanism includes a ratchet wheel 30 rotation of which causes adjustment of the grinding wheel. In operation a machined workpiece 20 is placed on measuring bases 18, 19 and the pusher 21 is slid by an hydraulic cylinder 23 to cause the base 6 and probe 9 to move towards the workpiece 20, thus deforming diaphragms 4, 5. When the probe contacts the workpiece the base 6 is moved relative to the probe to deform diaphragms 7, 8 and to bend springs 13, 14 until the contacts 15, 16 close. At this moment movement of the pusher 21 is stopped so that an electrical contact piece 26 moved therewith is in contact with one of a series of contact pieces 27 determined by the size of the workpiece 20. An hydraulic cylinder 35 is then operated to cause a lever 31 to rotate the wheel 30 to adjust the grinding wheel and at the same time to move an electrical contact piece 32 over a s |
