The total cross-sectional area of the electrodes is preferably 0À8 to 1À2 times that of the lower part of the mould 18. At the beginning of the process the mould 13 rests on a stool 14 with the projection 21 lying just below the tapered part of the mould. As refining proceeds the mould is moved upwardly to free the lower part of the ingot 19 which is surrounded by a heat insulating screen 22 to retard cooling and thereby prevent the ingot cracking. When refining is completed the solidified ingot is removed on a truck 15. |
