A web is coated with a viscous liquid from a cavity coating device forming a coating gap with the web across which an adjustable static pressure differential exists during coating, the normal height of the gap being at least twice the thickness of the liquid coating to be produced on the web, and this being reduced at least to twice the required thickness of the liquid coating at the beginning and end of coating.
