In a gas fired cupola furnace having the shaft 1 divided into chambers 5 and 6 by oppositely disposed, water-cooled ledges 3 and 4, the lower chamber 6 has an upwardly stepped wall 16 opposite a taphole 15 leading to a forehearth 2, burners 14 opening into combustion chambers sloping downwardly towards the hearth 10 and nozzles (17, Fig. 2) in divergent apertures (18) disposed in the wall below the ledge 3. These nozzles supply gaseous hydrocarbons for cooling the lining of chamber 6.
