description 1,166,052. Moulds. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 20 June, 1967 [6 July, 1966], No. 30274/66. Heading B3F. An ingot mould assembly, particularly for use in electroslag remelting a consumable electrode, comprises side walls 1 and corner plates 2 that produce obtuse angle corners on the cast ingot, a trough 3 arranged around its lowermost end for collecting coolant, and water inlets 6, 7 positioned in the trough 3 and which are connected to feed passages formed on the corner plates 2 for supplying water to a header 4 that includes discharge apertures for feeding water on to the exterior faces of the side walls 1. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) the feed passages are omitted and fins (9) are positioned at each junction of a side wall and a corner plate. Coolant is directed on to the exterior surface of the corner plates 2 and on to the fins (9) as well as on to the side walls 1, from a header. In use the mould assembly and cooling arrangement allows a thicker slag skin to form on the corners of the casting which is said to minimize segregation at the columnar crystal junction within the corners of the cast ingot. The open-ended mould may be tapered by having rectangular side walls 1 and traperzoidal corner plates 2 and in use is positioned on a suitable base-plate.
