[Also in Division C7] Apparatus for continuous steelmaking consists of a series of inter-connected chambers through which the iron passes, and means such as a thermocouple for monitoring the temperature of the discharging metal, that means being connected to a device which varies the relative input of oxygen and of solid oxidizing agents whereby the temperature of the metal is maintained constant. As illustrated, crude iron enters at 1 and passes through vessels 2, 3, 4, where it is treated with mixtures of oxygen and powdered oxidant, vessel 5 where it is blown with gaseous oxygen only, and vessel 6, where deoxidants and alloying elements are added. The temperature of the product is measured by thermocouple 16 which operates a regulating device 17 which controls the flow of oxygen; device 17 is in turn connected to solid oxidant feed hopper in such a manner that the total oxidizing potential remains constant.
