A moulded electrolyte block of a layer type primary cell comprises an alkaline electrolyte thickened with between 600 and 1200 gms. of starch and wheat flour, preferably in a 1 : 1 ratio, per litre of alkaline electrolyte, e.g. KOH. The positive electrode of an air depolarized cell comprises a collector mesh sandwiched between two cakes of active mass, each comprising activated carbon, alkaline electrolyte, carbon black and manganese dioxide. The cake in contact with the air is made hydrophobic by the addition of paraffin. The negative electrode is made from powdered zinc. The electrolyte block can be used in sealed cells having a manganese dioxide depolarizer.
