Production of amino-diacid omega-benzyl esters (I) comprises reacting amino-diacid (II) with substituted benzyl alcohol (III) in presence of an at least equimolar amount (based on (II)) of an alkanesulfonic acid (IV). Production of amino-diacid alpha-benzyl esters (I) involves reacting amino-diacid (II) with benzyl alcohol substituted by 1-3 R1 (III), in presence of an at least equimolar amount (based on (II)) of an alkanesulfonic acid (IV) and optionally a solvent. R1 = H, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or halo. An Independent claim is included for salts (V) of (I) with (IV) as new.
