description | The electromagnetic lens system incorporates three or more lenses formed around a single magnetic core (2) simplifying accurate alignment around the system axis. Maintaining a vacuum in the working tube of the lens is simplified by the absence of multiple elements. Machined annular grooves (16) in the core cause the magnetic flux set up by the energising coil to concentrate locally, forming electro-magnetic poles. The number and dimensions of the grooves can be designed to give the required electro-optic magnifying effect. The magnetic flux in the thin grooved sections of the core (17) saturates quickly allowing the formation of field configurations similar to those produced in the inter-pole spaces of conventional electro-magnetic lenses.
