The present invention concerns a fibrous web which comprises thermoplastic, melt-blown fibres or filaments which are mainly present as agglomerates or with multiple, fused fibre areas. Such agglomerates in the web act as columns and they give the desired degree of strength and resistance to compression. In contrast to previously known webs in which such agglomerates are not considered to be desirable, the webs according to the present invention can be especially used when they are formed into cylinders as filter plugs for tubular articles. In tubular articles according to the invention, the filter plugs have a desired pressure gradient but they have an unexpected degree of stability, all of which is achieved at financially attractive costs. Preferred embodiments include those in which the tensile strength in the machine direction in relation to the tensile strength in transverse direction of the machine is in the ratio of about 1:1 to 4:1 and the fibres or filaments are made of polypropylene. Other embodiments include webs and filter plugs which contain additives which have been distributed completely across the web.
