The invention comprises compounds of the general formula wherein R1 or R2 represent identical alkyl radicals, or together with the nitrogen atom, are linked to form a ring which may also contain a further hetero-atom, in particular oxygen, Alk is a straight or branched alkylene chain containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, X is a sulphone or sulphoxide radical and Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a nitrile group, and their salts and quaternary ammonium compounds. The compounds are prepared by the oxidation of the corresponding compounds of the above general formula wherein X represents a sulphur atom. The free bases thus obtained may be subsequently converted to their salts or quaternary ammonium compounds.
