description In an example embodiment described herein, there is disclosed a method for using a distributed ledger (e.g., a blockchain) for tracking debt information. For example, debt data is created by a first financial institution responsive to a loan. The debt data is stored in a distributed ledger by the first financial institution with a first key that is associated with the first financial institution. Payment data is also stored in the distributed ledger encrypted by the first key. Upon transfer of the debt to a second financial institution, subsequent debt data is stored in the distributed ledger encrypted by a second key associated with the second financial institution.
