Surveillance installations are often installed in public or also private buildings, said installations comprising a plurality of surveillance cameras, the image data flows of the surveillance cameras being forwarded to a surveillance center via a network. In order to improve availability, an evaluation device (1) for a surveillance system (13) is provided, said surveillance system (13) comprising at least one system component (4, 14) for a surveillance zone (15) and at least one sensor (5a, b) for surveilling the surveillance zone and/or for self-surveillance. The evaluation device comprises: an input interface (2) for acquiring sensor data S of the at least one sensor (5a, b); a data processing device (6) for processing the sensor data S and for determining a processing result V; an assessment device (7) for assessing the processing result V and for producing a message M based on said assessment; and an output interface (3) for outputting the message M, the message describing a level of reliability of the system component (4, 14).
