Zusammenfassung:The invention relates to a method for operating an arc furnace (1), wherein the arc furnace comprises a receiving vessel (2) for molten material (3) and also at least one electrode (4), wherein the electrode (4) is arranged on a carrier arm (5) and is held thereby, wherein a foamed slag former (C) is introduced into the receiving vessel (2) in order to form a layer of foamed slag (6) with a height (h) on the molten material (3). In order to determine the foamed slag height in an improved manner, and to thereby optimize the feed of the foamed slag former, the method comprises the following steps: a) determining a functional relationship (h = f (a)) between the oscillations of the electrode (4) or of the carrier arm (5) during operation of the arc furnace (1) and the height (h) of the foamed slag (6) by measurement; b) operating the arc furnace (1), the oscillations of the electrode (4) or of the carrier arm (5) being measured and, on the basis of these measured values, the height (h) of the foamed slag (6) being determined using the functional relationship (h = f (a)) determined in step a).
