Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to a method and a corresponding apparatus for fermenting cell cultures, in which the metabolic respiratory quotient (RQ) is determined online as an actual value for a regulation process, a target RQ suitable for achieving a desired productivity or product characteristic is determined as a desired value for a regulation process by means of trial or calculation, and a high cell yield, an optimum product yield and/or product quality, or a desired product characteristic, e.g. a reduction of secondary products, are achieved by controlling one or more metering devices on the basis of said desired and actual values.
