description A pet kennel (10) operable between a use position and a nested position. The pet kennel (10) contains an upper portion (12) having a top wall (32), a front wall (22), a rear wall (24), a first sidewall (26), a second sidewall (28) and a bottom opening (34) located opposite the top wall (32). The front wall (22), rear wall (24) and sidewalls (26,28) form a lip (36) adjacent the bottom opening. The lower portion (14) contains a bottom wall (48), a front wall (38), a rear wall (40), a first sidewall (42), a second sidewall (44) and an upper opening (50) located opposite the bottom wall (48). A rim (52) is formed adjacent the upper opening by the first wall (38), rear wall (40) and the sidewalls (42,44). While in the use position, the upper portion lip (36) is mated with the lower portion rim (52) so that the top wall (32) is spaced apart the bottom to form the pet containment area. In the nested positon, the upper portion lip (36) mated with the lower portion rim (52) such that the top wall is located adjacent the bottom wall. A latch (16) movable between a locked and an unlocked position, is connected to the upper portion so that the latch (16) engages the lower portion rim (52) to lock the upper and lower portions when in the use and nested position. When in the unlocked position, the latch (16) is separated from the lower portion and includes a detent to prevent the latch (16) from freely pivoting when unlocked.
