description A machine tool has a spindle head (15) and ball screws (17) on a saddle (10). The spindle head (15) is provided via sliding or rolling guide members (16) so as to be linearly movable. The ball screws (17) move the spindle head (15) along the guide members (16). Concave sliding or rolling guide portions (26) parallel to the guide members (16) are provided on both sides of the guide members (16). Counterweights (25) linearly movable on the concave guide portions (26) in a direction opposite to the spindle head (15) are provided. Racks (28a, 28b) are provided on opposed surfaces of the counterweights (25) and the spindle head (15) along the directions of movement of the spindle head (15) and the counterweights (25). Pinions (27a, 27b) meshing with the racks (28a, 28b) are rotatably supported in the saddle (10). The machine tool can effectively suppress vibrations of a structure (such as the saddle) generated during movement of a moving object (such as the spindle head) relative to the structure by a drive line (such as the ball screws), and always keep the center of gravity of an entire relatively moving portion constant.
