The removable upper section (4), as the ionising chamber, has a metallic reference electrode (17) connected to the gas outlet. Ionising electrodes (20) are near the mask connection (12) with a permeable shrouding (21) for the ionised gas. At least the upper section (4) and the shrouding (21) are of an insulating material resistant to high temps., and pref. a plastics such as PEEK or PTFE, resistant to temps. of more than 150 degrees C and pref. more than 250 degrees C.
