A detector output signal is provided to a computer (22) and flame ignition is attempted during an ignition sequence that is effected according to a comparison of the detector output signal level to predetermined value so as to facilitate flame ignition. An attempt at ignition that is unsuccessful (ignition failure) is recorded and in the event the number of recorded attempts exceeds a predetermined value, the detector is placed in a shutdown mode. Power to the igniter (211) is provided according to a control signal from the computer (22) to an igniter circuit (115). The circuit (115) includes a power supply and a power converter for isolating the igniter from power supply deficiencies.
