The cylinder head gasket has two outer metal layers (2) with an internal seal layer (5) and a metal spacer layer (4). In the space between adjacent bores (7,7') an additional sealing layer of graphite (8) provides improved sealing and an even sealing pressure over this area. The graphite layer is located between the rolled over edges (6,6') of the internal seal layer or is applied directly to the metal spacer layer using adhesive. Differential thicknesses of the graphite can be used to control the sealing force near the bores.
