Orientation of curatives by incorporation of cure package into fibers

Forming domains of high crosslinking density in an elastomer matrix comprises: (a) loading a carrier having a m.pt. above the mixing temp. of a green elastomer and below the curing temp. of the green elastomer, with 10-40 wt.% curing agents; (b) forming the carrier into fibres having a dia. of 0.001...

description Forming domains of high crosslinking density in an elastomer matrix comprises: (a) loading a carrier having a m.pt. above the mixing temp. of a green elastomer and below the curing temp. of the green elastomer, with 10-40 wt.% curing agents; (b) forming the carrier into fibres having a dia. of 0.001-0.050 ins. and an aspect ratio of 1-100; (c) mixing the fibres with a green elastomer; and (d) curing the elastomer and causing the diffusion of the curatives from the fibres into the elastomer. Pref. the carrier is a polyalkylene opt. substd. with -F, -Cl, -Br, -I, -OCH3, phenyl or methyl. The curing agents comprise S, amine accelerators, sulphenamide accelerators, mono- and di-sulphide accelerators, stearic acid and/or ZnO. The elastomer is a rubber selected from SBR, polybutadiene, 1,4-polyisoprene and/or nitrile rubber. The domains have an aspect ratio of 1-80 and comprise 1-20 vol.% of the matrix. Pref. the amt. of fibres mixed with the green elastomer is 1-20 phr. During the mixing step, the fibres are pref. oriented to cause orientation of the domains, wherein the oriented domains cause an increase of 20-50% in the 50% modulus over the same compsn. without the oriented domains.
