description In the subscriber line area of a switching system (VE), a ring network (RN) provided as feeder network is inserted. For this purpose, a gateway system (GWE) is arranged instead of the subscriber line devices (SLM) in one (AE1) of the receiving facilities (AE) receiving in each case n subscriber line devices (SLM), in which gateway system the signalling and communication procedure adaptation occurs. The coupling to the ring network (RN) is effected via ring coupling devices (RCB) to which the gateway system (GWE) and an external receiving facility (AEE) are connected which contains an adaptation device (APE) and several subscriber line devices (SLM). The adaptation device (APE), in turn, handles the signalling and information transmission procedure adaptation. The subscriber line devices (SLM) are connected to, for example, ISDN subscriber devices (SE) via subscriber lines (ASL). The communication system is operated, administered and monitored either centrally via an operating terminal arranged in the switching system (VE) from the switching system (VE) or, divided into two network areas - either subscriber line area exchange or switching system network - ring network - from the switching system (VE) and/or the gateway system (GWE).
