2-[(2-Alkylbenzo[b]furan-3-yl)methyl]- DELTA 2-imidazolines and salts thereof are peripheral vasoconstrictors useful for the relief of congestion of the nasal mucosa. They are produced from 2-alkylbenzo[b]furans by reaction with HCl and trioxane to form 2-alkyl-3-chloromethylbenzo[b]furans which are converted, by reaction with KCN in the presence of KI, to 2-alkyl-3-cyanomethylbenzo[b]furans which, on treatment with HCl in alcohol, produce the desired imidazoline derivatives.
