The aquarium is subdivided in a lengthwise direction and has, above it, a distributor in the form of a pipe extending the whole width of the aquarium. Two filter containers in the aquarium can tilt on axles, and each has a suction overflow pipe. Each suction overflow pipe has a horizontal section. Each filter container has one compartment containing filter material, and one empty compartment in which is the suction overflow pipe. In each subdivided part of the aquarium is a sieve-type filter in a separate compartment, positioned above the outlet. A pipe extending up to the water level in the subdivided part is joined to the outlet. Water flows through the pipe to the coarse filter container beneath the aquarium and then to the sump container, inside which is a pump controlled by a level-regulator. An aeration unit may be situated in the distributed pipe.
